This project, “In between the here and now,” refers to physical spaces of transition and our emotional and cognitive disconnection with the landscape. It also relates to the uncertainty principle, which acknowledges that the act of knowing or observing causes an object to take on a certain form. In our desire to understand and control nature, the landscape inevitably shifts in response to our observations.
Previously my work focused on interventions in the landscape and the value system used to catalog man and nature. This project shifts the focus in my work to my experience and personal view. I decided to bring characters into the picture as a way of directly translating my own experiences, thoughts and desires, conceiving of each distinct persona as a surrogate for myself. My hope is to create identifiable characters that the viewer must try to reconcile as coexisting with each other and with the landscape even if they are not reconcilable. Through my decision to use digital photography, these images exist in an ambiguous space that can function as video stills and impromptu snapshots and play on the recognition of the manipulated photograph. |
